A short history
Brunswick’s Old Town was laid out in 1771 on a grid of streets and squares much like Savannah’s. Today the Brunswick Old Town Historic District covers about 289 acres and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, with many Queen Anne and Stick-style homes from the 1880s. During World War II, Brunswick shipyards employed about 16,000 workers and built 99 Liberty ships.
Neighborhoods and home styles
Buyers find restored Victorians and cottages in Old Town, established neighborhoods across the mainland and newer construction in North Glynn. Brunswick offers more square footage per dollar than the islands and quick access to I-95, the Port of Brunswick and the causeway to St. Simons.
What buyers should check
- City or county. Homes inside Brunswick city limits have city taxes, services and permitting; others are in unincorporated Glynn County.
- Historic district rules. Exterior changes in Old Town may need design review.
- Flood zone and insurance. Get quotes before your due diligence period ends.
- City homestead exemption. Brunswick residents can apply for a separate city homestead exemption.
